Tomorrow is the ABC Fall TV preview- I’m super excited for Nashville, which, between that fact as well as the fact I managed to watch the entire first season of American Horror Story should really illustrate the point that I. will. watch. Connie. Britton. in. anything.

It’s Emmy season!! Don’t worry, I’m going to keep the ranting and raving to a minimum this year—I’ve more or less resigned to the fact that even if my favorite shows get nominated, they probably won’t win because that is the way Hollywood works. But I’ll keep watching in case something like Kyle Chandler last year happens again… a girl can dream.
So while I won’t be self-righteously caps locking you all to death when nominations snubs come in, I can still give you my Emmy nom wish-list! Fingers crossed:

Archie Punjabi (The Good Wife)Maggie Smith (Downton Abbey)
Christine Baranski (The Good Wife)Lena Headey (Game of Thrones) (I’m assuming she submitted to supporting but I’m not really sure but I’m putting her here anyway because pretty much everyone on Game of Thrones is supporting)

Comedy Supporting Actress:
Gillian Jacobs (Community)
Anna Chlumsky (Veep)
Jane Krakowski (30 Rock)
Aubrey Plaza (Parks and Recreation)
Alison Brie (Community)
Zosia Mamet (Girls) (she wasn’t given much this season, but when she was, she was great)

Miniseries:
Sherlock
Luther
The Hour
Page Eight
Great Expectations
Hatfields & McCoys (I threw this in purely to keep it from being a completely British list—and before you say anything, Downton Abbey is competing in the regular series categories this year—and I know I could put American Horror Story here since it’s competing as a miniseries, but hell to the NO.)

As for the rest of the categories, for writing & directing I’d be happy with any of the previously mentioned shows, especially Amy Poehler for writing/directing Parks, Louis C.K. for the Ducks episode of Louie and Lena Dunham definitely deserves some writing props for Girls (her episode about going home, co-written with Judd Apatow especially). And as long as Benedict Cumberbatch gets a nomination for Sherlock that’d be cool too.

I have a feeling I might be forgetting a show or two, but I guess I’d fully be in the Emmy spirit then!

Okay, because I can’t help myself, I wanted to do a quick mini Favorite TV List: Mid-Year Edition to go along with my year-end lists (‘10) (‘11). Because with Breaking Bad and Louie returning soon, and new shows like The Newsroom looking very promising, some of these shows unfortunately will be knocked off the list come December so it’s only right they get their due now! (or maybe all of the shows that haven’t aired yet this year will end up sucking and I’m spoiling the list for you right now.. who knows!) And god knows I love making lists of my favorite things, so to commemorate the end of the regular network season and to get excited for Summer TV, here are the top ten shows I’ve enjoyed so far this year:
1. Sherlock2. Mad Men3. Community4. Justified5. Parks and Recreation6. Veep7. Game of Thrones8. New Girl9. The Good Wife10. Girls
What have been your faves so far?!

Summer TV List time!
I did this last year and it was semi-successful, so I figured with all our favorite shows off for a few months, and Mad Men and HBO Sundays wrapping up in a couple weeks, it’s time to do some catch-up. Summer TV is not a total wasteland- after all, we’ve got Louie and Breaking Bad to look forward to (not to mention The Newsroom!) but that’s not for awhile yet.
So!
This year will be The Wire, Buffy, and New Girl. Because it’s really ridiculous that I still have not watched The Wire or Buffy yet (I know, I know) and I’ve caught enough clips and know enough people who like New Girl that I think I can get past my dislike of Zooey Deschanel (and I need to get ready for the inevitable hour of awesome that will be the New Girl / Mindy Project block on Fox next fall)
So what’s on your TV list for summer?

(although some of these match ups are just cruel… X-Files vs. West Wing? Lost vs. Mad Men? Breaking Bad vs. Friday Night Lights?!?!? You’re breaking my heart, Vulture!)

I’ve been finding myself not really liking many new shows lately, whether they start off kind of promising and then slowly turn frustratingly bad (Once Upon a Time, American Horror Story) or if they are just too dull or uninteresting to merit me watching past the third episode (Luck, Smash) or even if they’re just straight up bad (looking at you, House of Lies!)
But Awake might change this trend! Best pilot I’ve seen in a while. Let’s keep our fingers crossed NBC keeps it around for awhile (I think it did pretty mediocre in the ratings - not terrible - but mediocre on NBC is basically a smash hit at this point, so…)
And also, is it just me, or does Jason Isaacs’s American accent make him sound kinda like Dustin Hoffman?!

Did The Sopranos do more harm than good? | The AV Club

Very interesting article on the decline of episodic television. It’s easy to praise shows for taking a measured, slow approach to how they present their stories, but frankly it’s starting to get a little boring and the payoffs feel either anticlimactic or undeserved. You either have to do it incredibly well, or not at all. (I’m looking at you, AMC shows that are not Mad Men or Breaking Bad)

So House of Lies… mehhhhh.
I want to like it because !!the cast!! but… mehhhh. It’s kind of coming across like it’s trying too hard, but I will stop there because it’s unfair to judge an entire show by its pilot. I will keep watching for Jean-Ralphio and Veronica Mars and hopefully it gets a little more comfortable!

It’s that time of the year again! Where I take a year’s worth of obsessing over television and impossibly narrow it all down and rank what I thought was the best. It’s my 2nd Annual Favorite Television List!
If you weren’t around last year, here’s where you can find last year’s list. While you’ll find some repeats on this year’s list, it’s actually quite different! For one, there won’t be any Sherlock, Mad Men, or Party Down (RIP). Some shows have fallen, and some have leaped up quite a few spots.
And while I tried keeping this to Top 10, there was just way too much good television this year. And because the top 4 are all on the same level (and that level is blowing everyone else away) and they are two dramas and two comedies, I’m doing something a little different: there will be two #1s and two #2s, one for comedy and one for drama (because comparing the two is a little apples-to-oranges). So it’s technically a Top 12. I’ve just got more lovin’ to go around, what can I say.
There will also be a few honorable mentions, and a ‘Special Place of Honor’ post. There won’t be a Late Night TV category though, because I’ve been terrible at keeping up this year.
So yeah, hope you’re all excited! As always, I welcome disagreement and discussion and whatnot! While the list is made, I haven’t actually made any posts yet, so I’m not sure when it will start, but it will hopefully start within the next week or two. Stay tuned!
Yay TV!

This starts tonight!! Honorable mentions are up first!

Creeping Incoherence: When Your Favorite TV Show Changes

Interesting article over at GQ about the weird shifts that happen in TV shows sometimes. I was just thinking about this last night after watching Breaking Bad (STILL NOT OVER IT) and thought, we are four seasons into Breaking Bad and they only keep getting better! That is so rare that I catch myself nervously waiting for when it all collapses in on itself (but my faith in you is strong, Vince Gilligan!)

And of course because I can never read a television article without disagreeing with at least 40% of it  - I think Curb Your Enthusiasm is doing quite well without Cheryl around and saying LOST went off the rails in Season 5 is weird? It went off the rails in Season 3 - yes, it stayed mostly off the rails, but once the island started time-jumping at least it got interesting again.

Also: Friday Night Lights - hahahahahaha. Oh Landry. Don’t worry, we’re all forgetting that plotline ever happened.

Today’s the day: the EMMYS!
My feelings about these award shows are basically the same as good ole Ron Swanson’s up there, so let’s talk about what would make this award show a lot less stupid, shall we?
In a perfect world, here’s who I think should be walking home with trophies tonight (these are not predictions - in fact, they’re more like anti-predictions since whoever I think should win usually never do..)
Best Drama Series:Friday Night Lights (although if The Good Wife or Game of Thrones pull out a win I won’t be unhappy!)
Best Comedy Series:Parks and Recreation
Best Actor, Drama:Kyle Chandler, FNL (or Timmy O for Justified - but it’s Kyle’s last year!)
Best Actress, Drama:Connie Britton, FNL
Best Actor, Comedy:Steve Carell, The Office (it’s a bit of a sentimental vote for all of his years on The Office, because otherwise my vote would be with Louis CK)
Best Actress, Comedy:Amy Poehler, Parks and Rec
Best Supporting Actor, Drama:This is one of the toughest categories, I think. I’d be fine with almost any of them winning. Although Walton Goggins or Peter Dinklage would really make me happy!
Best Supporting Actress, Drama:Margo Martindale, Justified
Best Supporting Actor, Comedy:Ty Burrell, Modern Family (although we all know this category SHOULD have Nick Offerman in it..)Best Supporting Actress, Comedy:Jane Krakowski, 30 Rock
Variety Program:The Colbert Report
Miniseries:Downton Abbey
I don’t want to make this post super long, so here’s also hoping that Maggie Smith wins for Downton, Idris Elba wins for Luther, Louis CK wins for writing, Steven Moffat wins for writing Sherlock, and Friday Night Lights wins for the Drama writing.
PS. Don’t worry about me clogging your Dashboards tonight with Emmy-related ranting, I’ll be moving my Emmy rage to Twitter. So if you want to talk Emmys all night, follow me here! (and let me know who you are so I can follow you back) Although if something crazy happens, like if Parks and Rec or Steven Moffat wins, sorry Tumblr, you’ll be hearing about it.
