Okay, I’m sorry, now I have to talk about this Downton thing.

  • First of all, TVLine, let’s get one thing straight: if anyone is breaking Mad Men’s Emmy streak, it is going to be Breaking Bad. Or at least it should be Breaking Bad. I don’t care how good this upcoming season of Mad Men is, and I don’t care how much momentum Downton Abbey has, if there is any justice in this world (and god knows when it comes to awards shows, there isn’t) Breaking Bad will finally take home drama series. Because Season 4 was about as close to perfect television as you can fucking get.
  • So basically, I think this is probably good overall for Downton just because a nomination in the Drama Series will raise its profile even more (although I feel like the people who watch the Emmys already kind of know about it so it’s probably a moot point) but if it’s hoping to win anything, I think it’s going to start to get tricky.
  • Because let’s just go over some of the shows that it will be competing against: Breaking Bad, Mad Men, Justified, Homeland. Even the lesser threats - The Good Wife, Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire. The drama categories are crazy tough. I’m not saying it can’t win - but should it? I love Downton Abbey but I don’t know if I’d say it’s better than Justified. But that’s just my personal taste, so feel free to disagree on that point. There’s just a lot of great dramas out there right now.
  • But this means very good things for The Hour and Sherlock! That is if they’re still staying in the miniseries categories. I would imagine they’d stay put. I’m actually not sure what the rules are about what’s technically a miniseries and what’s not. I’m just going to assume they both are. Sherlock S2 hasn’t aired in the US yet, but I thiiiink by airing in May they’re just making the deadline by thismuch.

And yes, it is February and I am already talking about the Emmys because I don’t know if you noticed but I really love talking about the Emmys.
